The Submission Grinder is a free submission tracker and market database for writers of fiction and poetry.
In 2013, David Steffen and Anthony Sullivan founded The Submission Grinder, a donation-supported website to help writers find publishers for their work, which continues to this day under David’s direction. “We believe the value of our product lies in its availability and as such The Grinder is and always will be free to all users for all features.” It began with Diabolical Plots, an online magazine founded by David in 2008 to feature a variety of nonfiction content including interviews, reviews, and convention reports. Anthony joined him in 2009 and six years later, they started publishing original, speculative fiction online and in print, spearheaded by an annual sci-fi gem, The Long List Anthology: More Stories From the Hugo Award Nomination List (volumes 1-6 currently).
Every year after the Hugo Award ceremony, the World Science Fiction Society (WSFS) publishes a longer list of voting statistics for the award, including stories that were nominated but did not make the final ballot. Each volume of The Long List Anthology contains many stories from this longer list, stories that got a lot of fan votes but not enough to become a finalist.
Better than fee-based submission trackers, The Grinder has one unique feature the others lack.
You can search their database of publications by acceptable word count. This is exactly what short story writers need.
I have a story with 15,927 word count and decided to search for publishing opportunities. These are the places that a targeted search in The Grinder says will accept submissions of that size. I am just learning to use The Grinder so this is an unpolished result. I chose the Category of Literary fiction.
